Everything you ever wanted to know about birds and more!

Setting-Up Your Pet Bird Supply

If you are not the dog or cat type of pet owner, you may want to have a pet bird instead. There are however, so many different types of bird species and your pet bird supply should be tailor suited to the type of bird you are caring for. Whatever your type of bird is however, it is imperative that even before you bring your bird home, your pet bird supply should have been properly organized already. So what are your bird’s basic needs?

Cage

Number one in any pet bird supply list is your bird cage. You should ask your local pet store first or your vet about the maximum height and weight of your pet bird. You should then provide a cage that is suited to it. Consider too that birds naturally like spaces that are allow them free movement. You should also think of where you should place your bird cage. Of course, you should avoid placing it beside an open window where your bird can either breathe in noxious fumes or freeze to death. Again, think of our kind of pet bird. Love birds for example are uncomfortable in very noisy surroundings. At the same time, you do not want to make them isolated and unsociable pets.

Nutrition

Another must in your pet bird supply is the bird food and water supply. It would be easy to look for formulated food for whatever type of bird you have. This is because formulated food has especially been made for your type of bird and contains a variety of vitamins and minerals which your bird may not get in its usual food. If you are not opting for formulated food, you must consider that some birds eat seed while others do not. Other birds can also be fed fruits and vegetables. Check which kind of bird you have. It is also best to stick with feeding instructions especially for wild pet birds to make sure that you are not overfeeding, underfeeding or wrongly feeding your pet.

Cage Accessories

To make sure that your bird does not get bored and end up screaming and biting, make sure that your pet bird supply includes toys and accessories. Your pet bird supply should of course include a perch, but you can also add a nest. Feeding and water dispensers are also a necessity, all of which should be regularly checked for dirt and damages.

Toys

A lot of pet birds would appreciate you having some toys in your pet bird supply. Aside from helping them ease boredom, bird toys also help them develop their minds and bodies through mental and physical exercise. There are commercial toys made of natural materials like palm leaves, colored to attract your bird’s attention. You can also have toy ladders, puzzles and swings for your bird. Any pet bird supply is also incomplete if you do not have the occasional treat toy. Treat toys greatly improve their mental capacity because birds learn ways to get at the treats by figuring out puzzles or treat toy mechanisms.
